Art and Craft Factory Supports the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline
The Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline charity is a charity close to our hearts, and we have been helping to support this worthy cause for 15 years. The charity focuses on helping children and families, who live in the affected areas of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. The nuclear explosion which occurred in Belarus killed 31 people and is still responsible for the development of thyroid cancer, bone cancer and leukaemia, in thousands of young people who live in the surrounding affected areas. In the summer when dust and radiation levels rise, it is important that children leave affected areas for a few weeks of clean air and food and with the help of the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline, this is made possible.
Every year the charity arrange for large groups of children to come over to the UK for a few weeks, to stay with British families and recuperate from the strains of living in a highly radioactive environment. It is estimated that a child visiting the UK for as little as 4 weeks, can prolong their life by as much as two years. Many of the children visiting are in remission from illnesses such as leukaemia and children who are entering their teen years, are particularly at risk from developing an illness for a 2nd or 3rd time. Statistics dictate that their futures and life expectancy are very bleak at this stage, and a visit to the UK is vital in order to try and combat the illnesses.
While the children are in the UK, the charity finds ways to keep them entertained and to ensure that they have a positive and enjoyable experience, often very different to their home life. 15 Years ago we were approached by Little Sutton Methodist Church, who have worked closely with the charity for many years and they asked us to supply craft items, as part of the entertainment for the children on their visit. As a business which has children at the core of its activities, we were keen to aid the charity in creating a positive experience for the visiting children. That year and every year since we were approached, we have provided every visiting child with a plain pencil case to decorate, as well as a box of other craft items for them to enjoy. Not only is this an activity to keep them occupied while they are visiting, but a memento of their experience in the UK.
The Art & Craft Factory is part of the John L Brierley Group, which supports and donates frequently to various charities. Our staff choose a new charity to donate to each month, but the Art & Craft Factory have continued to work with this Chernobyl Children’s charity for many years now, as we believe strongly in the work that they are doing, prolonging and making children’s lives more enjoyable.
